Marquetry flooring, which has gained significant popularity today, provides an elegant visual appeal.
The art of marquetry involves the meticulous assembly of different colored woods to create unique designs. Every piece is one of a kind, making it impossible to recreate an identical version due to the natural variations in wood patterns.
This art dates back to ancient Egypt! Craftsmen in Queen Cleopatra’s palace showcased their skills, competing to impress her with their works. Later, the art became prominent in France, especially in Paris, with marquetry paintings and furniture entering the Louvre and Versailles palaces. The practice then spread to Anatolia and Arabia and is currently very popular in Italy.
Marquetry art also flourished in the Ottoman Empire, with Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror personally practicing it. However, over time, the art faded and is now nearly extinct.
“Possessing marquetry works is undoubtedly a privilege for art enthusiasts.”
When installing marquetry flooring, it should be laid on a high-strength screed or applied over plywood. The surface must be clean and smooth. Uneven areas should be corrected using leveling screed prepared with moisture-free chemicals.
